In the 5-6 years that he’s been active in the Kannada film industry, actor Nagabhushana has, by and large, done roles with a comedic touch, giving him the comedian stamp. But since turning leading man, he’s been trying to show audiences that he can do more than just providing the laughs. “It’s simple, I am not a comedian, I am an actor who also does comedy. With Tagaru Palya I have proven that I am capable of a lot more. If you give me an emotional scene, I can handle that,” says the actor, who is set to prove that he can handle action as an element of the narrative as well, with his next, Vidyapati.
Having said that, Nagabhushana adds that he understands the importance of entertainment in a film. Audiences, he reckons, will watch any genre of film, provided it is told in an entertaining fashion. “Instead, if you decide to all message-driven and philosophical, it will bore your audience. That should never be the case,” he adds.

With Vidyapati, his next release, which will be in theatres on April 10, Nagabhushana says that the focus has squarely been on entertainment, with the recently released trailer providing a sneak peek of what is in store. The beauty of his character in Vidyapati, says Nagabhushana, is its versatility, which, he believes will have audiences turn around and say that he’s done a good job.
One realization that Nagabhushana has had is that his years as a supporting actor have stood him in good stead and is the reason his debut as a leading man, Tagaru Palya worked at the box office. Had he done the film without the backing of his body of work, he says it would not have worked. Kannada audiences, he says, have a certain understanding of what he is like as an actor and, hence, have expectations too. With Vidyapati, he is taking this journey to the next level.
Produced by Daali Dhananjaya, who has a pivotal cameo in the film, Vidyapati pairs Nagabhushana with Upadhyaksha fame Malaika Vasupal.
