After receiving rave reviews upon its January 2025 debut, the crime thriller Black Warrant by Vikramaditya Motwane has been permanently delayed, putting a damper on fans' enthusiasm for the highly anticipated second season. Major creative disagreements between the filmmaker and Netflix India reportedly caused the delay, coinciding with the expected ramp-up in production.

Production halted

Following the popularity of the first season (led by Zahan Kapoor) and taking place in the 1980s at Tihar Jail, production for the second season is planned to begin this month. The announcement was made official in February. However, the project has come to a standstill as September concludes.

The central argument, according to sources close to the production, is over the creative direction of the first episodes. "Netflix wants the second season to be more accessible, with a faster hook and more punch," a source told mid-day. According to Motwane, the show's grit was what made the first season so memorable.

Rewrites mandatory

"As per the initial plan, the shoot was to begin by October, but the heads at the streamer have refused to give a go-ahead unless they are satisfied with the rewrites," the insider continued.

Despite continuing discussions over several weeks, no agreement has been reached. Season one co-director Motwane is unwavering in his commitment to the show's signature tone and subject matter. "Neither side is willing to compromise," claimed an anonymous show insider who confirmed the impasse, adding, "We were to begin table reads around this time, but I have been asked to release my dates now. That means the show is on hold for now."

Vikramaditya Motwane's jam-packed schedule

Motwane's already packed professional schedule includes a biopic on former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and another web series, which further complicates the postponement. Before turning to the biopic, Motwane intended to wrap up Black Warrant 2 by year's end. "If this window is lost, he cannot return to the project for at least a year"—a crew member who expressed concern about the length of time the project would be delayed.

Netflix aims to expand the show's viewership significantly. Despite the streaming giant's desire to approve the series, a source asserts that rewrites are non-negotiable. Critics received season one well, but audiences were not as impressed. According to the source, they are working to change that because the series features strong storytelling, talented acting, and excellent direction.

Uncertainty endangers production schedule

The source also admitted that the protracted uncertainty "could affect cast schedules and budgets," implying that there may be unfavourable outcomes as a result. With the words, "The drafts will require some rewriting, but the show is happening from our end," they maintained their optimism about the show's future. However, a slowdown in development could lead to a loss of the first season's excitement. The current indefinite postponement means that viewers will have to endure the crime thriller for a longer time before it returns.
