It's almost confirmed that Vikram-starrer Mahaan and Dhanush-starrer Maaran will skip their theatrical releases. The movies are expected to have direct-to-OTT releases on Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar respectively. Official announcements on the films' digital releases are likely to happen soon.
It was heard that both Mahaan and Maaran, directed by Karthik Subbaraj and Karthick Naren respectively, will be released around the Pongal festival, in the second week of January. But looks like fans of both the stars have to wait for some more time to watch the much expected movies of the year.
According to sources, both the films are likely to release only towards January end. In fact, there are speculations that Maaran's release might be pushed to February. Sathya Jyothi Films, which is bankrolling Maaran, is coming up with the Disney+ Hotstar premiere of another project of theirs, Anbarivu, on January 7.
Though the production team had earlier denied the straight-to-OTT releases of Anbarivu and Maaran, they have announced the former's OTT premiere recently. It is expected that Maaran will also follow the suit soon after an official announcement from the makers.
On the other hand, Seven Screen Studio, which has produced Mahaan, is bankrolling Vikram's next movie Cobra as well. With Mahaan premiering directly on OTT, it will be Karthik Subbaraj's second continuous digital release. His Dhanush-starrer Jagame Thandhiram (streaming on Netflix) had released earlier this year, leaving fans disappointed.
Mahaan will be Vikram's first direct OTT release. The movie marks the first collaboration of himself and his son Dhruv. Vikram's last outing was Kadaram Kondan (streaming on Amazon Prime Video) which released in 2019. He has Ponniyin Selvan and Dhruva Natchathiram, too, in his kitty.
