In all his promotional interviews for his next release Maadeva, directed by Naveen Reddy, Fighter actor Vinnod Prabhakar has been effusive about the platform he was given to show audiences that he can do more than just fight. Vinnod has spoken at length about the fact that his earlier films have largely been about having a set number of fight sequences and songs, which would fetch decent returns for Hindi dubbing rights, but always lacked substance as far as the story goes.
That, he says, changes with Maadeva, and will be seen in his upcoming lineup as well, which includes films like Lankasura, Nelson and Balaramana Dinagalu. “After Maadeva, there will be a marked change in the kind of scripts written for me. Lankasura is a home production, while Nelson sees me play a 55-year-old. All of these films have performance-oriented roles, which, like Maadeva, will show audiences that I can do much more than just fight. All of them have given me a platform to prove that I am a versatile artiste,” says Vinnod.
In his over two-decade-long career, Vinnod says that he has had multiple rounds of introspection to figure out where and why he was going wrong with film and role choices or his performance, for that matter. The problem, he reckons, stemmed from the excessive expectations that audiences had of him, wanting to see what they had enjoyed in all of his father’s films, in his very first project. “These days, not only has my choice of roles changed, but also my approach – I am more prepared as an actor and am not willing to make any more mistakes,” he says.

As excited as Vinnod is about what he’s done in Maadeva, he admits he is nervous about the theatrical release, what with the Kannada film industry in a rather weak phase now, with audiences rarely making trips to movie halls. “We have not made an extraordinary film, but what I can promise is an entertaining outing for all audiences,” he says.
