Vir Das on board for country music based comedy series, Country Eastern, at Fox

Vir Das is taking his comedy prowess to Fox, and will develop a new comedy show for the studios along with Sam Laybourne. The series is titled Country Eastern.

According to Deadline, Das will serve as a writer on the show and is in talks to star in it as well. The show will revolve around the story of an aristocratic Indian man who, along with his family, moves to Memphis,Tennessee in the United States. There, the man takes the decision of pursuing his dream of becoming a country singer, oblivious to the fact that he is not good at it at all.

Laybourne serves as the series showrunner and will co-write and executive produce Country Eastern along with Das. Laybourne’s writing credits include his work on popular comedy shows such as Black-ish, The Real O’Neals, Cougar Town, and Arrested Development.

Country Eastern will be produced under the banners of CBS Studios and Fox Entertainment.

Das has previously been a part of American shows such as Whiskey Cavalier, Fresh Off the Boat and Hasmokh. The actor-comedian is the first Indian comedian to headline his own Netflix comedy special, 2017’s Abroad Understanding. His recent Netflix special, For India, was nominated for an International Emmy Award. He will be seen next in Judd Apatow’s upcoming film The Bubble, in which he will share the screen with Karen Gillan, Fred Armisen and Pedro Pascal.
