Telugu film fraternity is heaving a huge sigh of relief as Sai Dharam Tej’s latest release Virupaksha has broken a dry spell at the box office in Telugu states. Besides earning glowing reviews from critics, the Karthik Dandu-directed mystical thriller has received a thumbs up from theatre-going crowds. The film has been in the news for the contributions from the technical crew and the sharp writing as well.
Being the lead actor’s comeback film after a life-threatening accident, this reception will be a certain morale booster for him and his fans. The film has collected nearly Rs 11 crore gross on day one. Andhra Box Office reports that the film earned Rs 3.25 crore in the Telangana region and grossed over Rs 4.5 crore in the ceded and other regions of Andhra Pradesh.
Garnering nearly Rs 7.7 crore in Telugu states, the film put up a decent figure in the US as well, collecting Rs 2.30 crore. The thriller collected about a crore in Karnataka and other locations across the globe. The collections are expected to get better over the weekend. The film’s theatrical rights are valued at Rs 25 crore and there’s some distance to go for the distributors to recover their sum. However, given the word of mouth and the opening figures, this seems possible.
The makers plan to promote Virupaksha in other languages as well and one can’t be sure if a delayed release would be helpful. With screenplay by Sukumar, Virupaksha has cinematography by Shamdat Sainudeen and production design by Sri Nagendra Tangala. Navin Nooli is the editor. Ajay, Brahmaji, Sunil and Sai Chand essayed other important roles in the thriller.
Netflix has acquired the film’s post-theatrical streaming rights and will premiere the film in the second half of May. Virupaksha is Samyuktha Menon’s fourth consecutive hit in the industry after Bheemla Nayak, Bimbisara and Sir.
