Vishal Bhardwaj is a filmmaker who has impressed the audience with his Shakespearean influence, and the poetic world he creates through his cinema. Over the years, the filmmaker has given us some of the most brilliant films including Omkara, Maachis, Haider, Makdee, and more. However, in 2017 he made a movie that failed to impress the critics as well as the audience. Rangoon starring Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan, and Shahid Kapoor went on to be a dud in his career.

Now as the filmmaker looks back he feels that he should that the VFX on the film was not right and his overconfidence made him say yes to a much lower budget than what was require to make it. Rangoon was written and directed by Bhardwaj with him doing the music and Gulzar sahab on lyrics. The filmmaker now feels that he should have disowned the movie.

As per the Midday interview, Vishal Bhardwaj, while talking about Rangoon said, “I should have put my foot down in Rangoon and said I don’t care about the release date. The VFX is not right in the final scene… Those kinds of pressures. Everyone’s like, ‘No, it will be a huge loss…’ At that time, you should become Sanjay Leela Bhansali, no matter how much loss there is, things wouldn’t go like that.”

Vishal Bhardwaj revealed how he made Rangoon in a budget of Re 35 crore when it needed Rs 70 Crore. He reveals he was overconfident after Haider. “You regret those decisions. I don’t regret my creative thought of Rangoon. It was very pure, very unique. But, of course, a film that should be made in Rs 70 crore, and I have decided to make it in Rs 35 crore, then I am foolish,” he said.

“I should have learned something from Shekhar Kapur and disowned the movie,” he added. Vishal even said that his VFX supervisor ditched him because he wanted to make his own short film, and added, “I don’t blame others for my own mistakes.”
