It is not very common to see Bollywood superstars – known for their action films, to essay a role in a sports drama. Ajay Devgn surely defies this statement. The 54-year-old actor – who is best known for massy action films like Singham, Singham Again – is soon going to headline a sports drama titled Maidaan. Amit Sharma is the director of the film. Here is what the filmmaker said about the upcoming project.

Was Amit Sharma skeptical about casting Ajay Devgn in Maidaan?

During a chat with The Indian Express, Amit Sharma outlined that his forthcoming film Maidaan is a sports drama based on the life of Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. Keeping in view of Ajay Devgn’s popular works in the past, Amit outlined why he cast Devgn in the film.

“I had never worked with him before, so I had my own doubts. You build an image in your mind of an actor and his image in my mind was of Singham. But he broke that. He would keep the stardom of Ajay Devgn outside the set. Once in, he would be Syed. His performance in the film is incredible. I’m not saying because it’s my film, but viewers will realize once they watch it,” the filmmaker said.

The film – which was earlier scheduled to be released in February 2023, will finally be released on April 10, 2024. Though the exact cause of the delay is uncertain, one thing is for sure is that this Ajay Devgn starrer is going to clash with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan – starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff – at the box office.

What did Ajay Devgn say to Bade Miyan Chote Miyan fans recently?

On March 23, the makers of Maidaan released a message, signaling its clash with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which stars the Khiladi of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar, and Tiger Shroff.

Reacting to the development, Ajay Devgn took a dig at Akshay Kumar over Maidaan's clash with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Devgn said, “Asli khiladi dikhenge, asli #Maidaan mein. Come, cheer and celebrate with us on 10th April, in cinemas only!” Lakhs of social media users have liked his post.
