Sony Pictures Releasing released Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody in the US on December 23, 2022. The film divided critics, with some praising Ackie's performance and others saying it broke with the norm for music biopics. Earnings were $59.8 million.

Whitney Houston's enduring legacy

The life and legacy of Whitney Houston, who passed away in 2012, have sparked an almost pathological interest in discovering who the actual Whitney Houston was beyond the dazzling stage persona of a truly remarkable musician. The six-time Grammy winner's personal life, including her sexuality, her complicated relationship with her parents, her attempts at marriage and parenthood, and her struggles with substance abuse, has been the centre of numerous narratives, documentaries, and series, despite her undeniable talent and glittering career, which propelled her to fame.

Kasi Lemmons' biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, prominently features Houston's extensive career and intricate personal life. The film tackles the tale of Whitney (Ackie), adding detail to her life on and off the stage in an attempt to provide an authentic retelling, in contrast to previous Houston films that have had a morbid and occasionally opportunistic fixation with her hardships and tragedies. This could be because Whitney's sister-in-law and estate administrator, Pat Houston, gave her consent for record producer and mentor Clive Davis to act as an executive producer on the film.

The film is a no-holds-barred portrayal of the complicated and multi-faceted lady behind The Voice.
