Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, the stars from 2023’s cultural phenomenon Barbenheimer, unite for the 2024 romantic action comedy The Fall Guy. The film, helmed by David Leitch, hits theatres this weekend on the 3rd of May, and follows a retired stuntman named Colt Seavers who decides to investigate the disappearance of the lead star of his ex-girlfriend’s film. But as it turns out, he soon becomes entangled in a web of dangerous conspiracy. The film has garnered praise after its early release in the US. So if you love films that feature oddball couples, we have curated a list of films featuring unusual couples for today’s episode of the List Hai Toh Hit Hai podcast.

As Good as It Gets - Netflix

Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson is largely known for his gritty roles in many Hollywood blockbusters. However, in the 1997 film As Good as it Gets, the Academy Award-winner slips into a new avatar as Melvin Udall – a cynical and bigoted writer with OCD. His insular routine life is disrupted when he finds himself in a situation where he must care for his gay neighbour's dog. Along the way, he forms an unlikely relationship with a waitress, Carol, and becomes empathetic towards her ailing son. Melvin's journey challenges his prejudices and insecurities, leading him to achieve personal growth, a new perspective, and a deeper connection with those around him. The film is directed by James L Brooks and stars Helen Hunt as Carol, with Greg Kinnear, Cuba Gooding Jr., Skeet Ulrich, and Shirley Knight in supporting roles. This is one romcom you’d want to rewatch this weekend.

The Bodyguard - Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play

One of the most iconic films on this list is the 1992 film The Bodyguard. Apart from featuring one of the most popular stories, the film boasts the original soundtrack,”I’ll Always Love You” by lead star Whitney Houston. The film stars Kevin Costner as Frank Farmer, a former secret service agent hired to protect pop sensation Rachel Marron, played by Houston, from a stalker. As Frank attempts to navigate his client’s glamorous world, their relationship evolves into a passionate romance. However, Frank faces escalating threats and struggles to keep Rachel safe. This is a love story laced with taut thriller elements that ensures there’s something for everyone.

Excess Baggage - Prime Video

Excess Baggage is a romantic comedy that revolves around Emily who stages her own kidnapping to grab her father's attention. However, her plans spiral out of control after she is accidentally abducted by a car thief named Vincent. During their chaotic  journey, Emily and Vincent develop a unique connection while attempting to evade law enforcement and dangerous criminals. Academy Award-winner Benicio Del Toro plays the lead alongside ‘90s superstar Alicia Silverstone in the film. This duo would reunite decades later in the 2023 Netflix crime-thriller Reptile. But this is the film that first set off their fluid onscreen chemistry.

Maid in Manhattan - Amazon Prime, Apple TV

Maid in Manhattan is a romantic comedy that tells the story of Marisa Ventura, a housekeeper with a plush hotel. When she is mistaken for a guest by an affluent politician named Chris Marshall, she decides to play along. As the unlikely duo fall for each other and their romance blossoms, Marisa struggles to maintain her true identity while navigating the challenges of their disparate worlds. The film explores themes of class divide, love, and self-discovery. Directed by Wayne Wang, the film stars Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes in lead roles.

Warm Bodies - OTTplay Premium

Warm Bodies is a horror comedy set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. The story revolves around R, a zombie who rescues Julie, a human, from other zombies. As R develops unexpected feelings for Julie, their unlikely romance faces challenges due to their obvious differences. The film, directed by Jonathan Levine and starring Nicholas Hoult as R and Teresa Palmer as Julie, is a unique take on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and has gained a cult following in the horror comedy genre.

Notting Hill - JioCinema

Notting Hill, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, is perhaps the most popular romantic comedy on this list. It follows the unlikely love story between William Thacker, a bookstore owner in London, and Anna Scott, a popular Hollywood actress. Their chance meeting takes place when Anna walks into William's bookstore, which somehow flourishes into a whirlwind romance. However, their fairytale love story is complicated by the challenges of public scrutiny and the notorious British paparazzi. Directed by Roger Michell, the film explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the impact of fame on personal relationships.

Her -  Prime Video

Spike Jonze’s Her is probably the most unconventional film on this list and features the most unusual couple. It is set in the near future, where a lonely writer named Theodore develops feelings for an advanced operating system called Samantha. As Theodore comes to terms with his complex feelings for Samantha, their relationship evolves into a profound and transformative tale of love. Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix plays the lead as Theodore, with Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha. There is an exploration of themes such as connection, intimacy, and the human experience in a futurist society.

Long Shot - OTTplay Premium

One of the most underappreciated films on this list is the 2019 romantic comedy Long Shot. The film follows the unlikely romance between a passionate yet outspoken journalist Fred Flarsky, and the U.S. Secretary of State Charlotte Field, who also happens to be Fred's former babysitter. When Charlotte announces her candidacy for a presidential run, Fred is roped in as her speechwriter, leading to a hilarious love story. Directed by Jonathan Levine, the film stars Seth Rogen as Fred and Charlize Theron as Charlotte. Long Shot explores themes of love, politics, and the challenges of high-profile relationships that come under scrutiny for constantly being in the public eye.

Well that's all we got for this episode, until the next time its host Nikhil signing out.
