Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrates his 75th birthday on September 17, 2025. On the special occasion, it was announced that a biopic will be made, chronicling Modi’s journey from his initial political days in Gujarat to the Prime Minister of India. Interestingly, Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan has been roped in to play Modi in the biopic Maa Vande, directed by Kranthi Kumar CH. Who is Unni Mukundan?

Unni Mukundan is a Malayalam actor, who has starred in several hit films, including the 2024 brutal action film Marco. A native of Thrissur in Kerala, Unni Mukundan has also spent some periods of his childhood in Gujarat and knows the local language, which the makers could have factored in while zeroing in on him for Modi's biopic.

Unni Mukundan made his debut in 2011 with a Tamil film, titled Seedan, which is the official remake of the popular Malayalam movie Nandanam, starring Navya Nair and Prithviraj Sukumaran. He next appeared in Mammootty’s Bombay March 12 and Thalsamayam Oru Penkutty, which also starred Nithya Menen.

However, it was the 2012 Malayalam film Mallu Singh that brought him some much-needed attention. He played Hari Narayan in this fun film, which also starred Kunchacko Boban in a lead role. It was a mixed bag of hits and misses in the subsequent years. Another film that garnered much attention was filmmaker Lal Jose’s Vikramadithyan, where he again played a lead role alongside Dulquer Salmaan.

He also acted in Telugu films with Janatha Garage, starring Jr NTR and Mohanlal, being his debut film, though he was noticed for his performance in Bhaagamathie, starring Anushka Shetty.

Malikappuram in 2022 is one of his much-liked Malayalam films, which also entered the Rs 100 crore club, as per reports. His most recent hit was the violent action film Marco, establishing him as an action superstar from Malayalam. The brutal violence depicted in the film led to much debates and discussions, but the film was a major success.

Recently, Unni Mukundan was embroiled in a controversy after former manager Vipin Kumar alleged that the star manhandled him for praising Narivetta, starring Tovino Thomas. But Unni Mukundan had denied Vipin's claims.
