The film, led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, is all set for its streaming debut on JioHotstar beginning March 22, 2024. Wicked was written by Dana Fox and Winnie Holzman and directed by Jon M. Chu in 2024. Stephen Schwartz and Holzman's 2003 stage musical was based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, which was a reinvention of the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It adapts the first act of that musical.

Wicked: Star-studded cast
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo play the lead parts in the film. Other notable actors include Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. Elphaba, the titular Wicked Witch of the West, and her friendship with Galinda, who transforms into Glinda the Good, are the protagonists of this Oz-set story that takes place before Dorothy Gale arrives from Kansas.
Plot: Untold story of Oz's witches
In Wicked, the secret tale of Oz's witches is told. The misinterpretation of Elphaba's power stems from her green skin. Glinda is a popular, privileged girl who has not yet found her true heart. In the fanciful Land of Oz, they meet as students at Shiz University and develop an unexpected yet deep connection. Their lifestyles diverge drastically after an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which puts a strain on their friendship. Both Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West will realise their destiny as a result of their incredible travels to Oz.
The COVID-19 pandemic was one of several setbacks that dragged out the production schedule, but in 2020, Chu was cast as director, and Erivo and Grande joined the cast the next year. The characters' adventures and relationships were extended and story details were not cut by dividing the adaptation into two parts. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike halted principal production in July 2023, although it restarted and was completed in January 2024.
Global release and critical acclaim
From its November 2024 premiere at Sydney, Australia's State Theatre, to its theatrical release in the US, Wicked had quite the journey. It was acclaimed by critics, became popular instantly, was selected by the American Film Institute as one of the top films of 2024, and took home the top prize at the National Board of Review for Best Picture.
Not only did it win Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, but it also got 10 nominations, including Best Picture, at the 97th Academy Awards. With a budget of $150 million, it has become the highest-grossing musical film adaptation, the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2024, and the highest-grossing Oz film, with a total worldwide gross of $735 million.
Sequel release date announced
The debut date of Wicked: For Good, the sequel, is set for November 21, 2025.
