Pongal has just passed by and the makers of the festive season’s two big releases, Captain Miller and Ayalaan, have hinted that their respective films will have a sequel/prequel. While Dhanush-starrer Captain Miller’s post-credits scene that the story will be on, the makers of Sivakarthikeyan’s Ayalaan have already revealed the initial budget for the VFX and CGI for the sequel to be Rs 50 crore.
While we wait for the sequel for both the films, it is undeniable fact that sequel fever is widespread in Tamil film industry, with many franchises and classic films expected to make a return for a second part. With talks going on for a sequel for films like Vada Chennai, Theeran, Jailer, among others, let’s take a look at the most anticipated sequels from Tamil.
The first instalment from Lokesh Kanagaraj’s cinematic universe, Kaithi 2 is undeniably one of the most awaited sequels in Tamil. Starring Karthi as Dilli, a convict on parole, Kaithi 2 has been confirmed by the makers and Lokesh himself at several occasions. Kaithi was about the central convict character who, at a gunpoint, is tasked to help a cop bust a drug racket, in order to meet his daughter. Karthi is expected to reprise his character, adding the excitement to how his role will be shaped in LCU.
A boxing drama directed by Pa Ranjith, the makers of Sarpatta Parambarai announced that a sequel is at works a few months ago. Titled Sarpatta Round 2, the sequel will have returning cast comprising of Arya, Dushara Vijayan, among others. The first film was set against the backdrop of north Chennai and the competitive nature of two boxing clans. The film also starred Santhosh Pratap, John Kokken, Pasupathy, among others.
Indian 2 is the sequel to Kamal Haasan's 1990 vigilante action drama. Shankar, who helmed the first film, will be returning to the director's chair once again. With Indian 2, Kamal is expected to return as his famous character "Indian Thatha" who is on the mission to eliminate corruption in India. Indian 2 boasts an ensemble star cast including Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha, among others.
Another sequel that the Tamil industry is waiting for is Thani Oruvan 2. The sequel to the 2015 Tamil film, will have the brothers, director Mohan Raja and actor Jayam Ravi, reunite once again. The 2015 film revolved around a cat-and-mouse chase between a cop and scientist criminal Siddharth Abhimanyu who is a mastermind behind an organised crime network. The sequel will be backed by AGS Entertainment which also produced the first part. Nayanthara who played the female lead, is expected to return too.
Director Vetrimaaran who last made Viduthalai, is expecting the release of its second part, Viduthalai 2, sometime in 2024. Starring Soori, Bhavani Sre, Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Chetan and others, the film is a period action drama, concentrating on the police brutality and people's movement against it. Viduthalai 2 is expected to have more screen space for Vijay Sethupathi, who had a limited screen time in the first part.
