Though Rajamouli's Baahubali 2 aka Baahubali: The Conclusion unsurprisingly took a gargantuan opening everywhere across the country, it went on to become the highest grossing movie in Tamil Nadu, surpassing all Tamil big ticket films, leaving the industry stunned. It took a few years for a Tamil movie to surpass the record set by the Prabhas-starrer.
When Kollywood insiders considered it as a one-off incident, Prashanth Neel came up with KGF: Chapter 2, starring Yash in the lead. It's huge opening was anticipated, but not many expected that it would gross 100 crores from Tamil Nadu alone.
The release of Vijay-starrer Beast a day before KGF 2 hit the screens was one of the major reasons which led to many assuming that the latter may not collect huge money at the Kollywood box office. But the former opening to mixed reviews turned the tables, leaving movie buffs surprised.
Many theatres across Tamil Nadu started screening KGF: Chapter 2 at as early as 1 am even after a few days of its release. A few exhibitors said that the movie is the biggest money spinner in their theatres in a span of more than a decade.
The big budget Kannada film has thus become the second dubbed movie to gross a collection of 100 crores from Tamil Nadu. It is also the second film to achieve this feat in the state this year after Beast.
Though a multi-starrer like Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal has released in theatres, exhibitors say that the Sandalwood action flick which has grossed 1,000 crores at the box office, is still in demand among Tamil audience. Film buffs are looking forward to the final run of the movie to know if the biggest hit of Indian film in recent times will rewrite more records at the Tamil box office.
