As per reports, Dunki is based on the problem of "donkey flight," an illegal backdoor route that has become a popular escape route for Indians seeking asylum in the United States and Canada.

As per reports in Peeping Moon, the illegal way of entering a foreign country via many stops in other countries is known as donkey flying. Thousands of young people use this strategy every year after they are unable to reach the target nation through legal channels. Hirani's film tackles this broad issue in his characteristic style, with a story that is both emotional and light-hearted. It's the story of a Punjabi man and his difficult trip to Canada.

Taapsee Pannu is the female lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki. The actor shared her excitement by tweeting, "Finally, it’s happening!" She also wrote, "Yes it’s hard to make it till here, and it’s harder when you are all by yourself but then a superstar once said, 'अगर किसी चीज को शिद्दत से चाहो तो पूरी कायनात तुम्हे उससे मिलाने में लग जाती है' cheers to honesty, hard work and perseverance. Taapsee Pannu starred in Sujoy Ghosh's Badla alongside Amitabh Bachchan, which was produced by Shah Rukh Khan's home banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.

Several reports have been circulating for the past two decades that Shah Rukh Khan was offered the titular role of Munna Bhai in Rajkumar Hirani's directorial debut. However, the superstar couldn't be a part of it, and the iconic role is being played by Sanjay Dutt. Meanwhile, in the credits of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., Hirani even thanked SRK "for his inputs on the script".&nbsp;

"Through the course of my career, Shah Rukh Khan has always been on my wish list," Rajkumar Hirani said in a statement. The filmmaker also said that after trying to work multiple times in the past, they were ultimately destined to have Dunki commemorate their partnership. Hirani praised SRK by saying that he brings unrivalled energy, charisma, humour, and charm to a film, and he is excited about bringing that magic to the big screen.

Shah Rukh Khan stated that Rajkumar Hirani is one of the finest filmmakers of our generation. The superstar shared that they have long spoken about working together, and he is ecstatic that they are finally doing it with Dunki. They have just been shooting for a month, and SRK is loving every minute of it. Khan went on to say, "Donkey, Monkey, Raju ke liye main... kuch bhi ban sakta hoon!"

Dunki, a JIO Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, and Rajkumar Hirani Films production, is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and stars Shah Rukh Khan and Tapsee Pannu. It is written by Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijaat Joshi, and Kanika Dhillon, and produced by Rajkumar Hirani and Gauri Khan. The film began shooting in April 2022, with the next schedule taking place in Punjab.

The shooting of Dunki has been kickstarted recently. Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani have booked December 22, 2023 as the release date for Dunki.
