Bollywood has portrayed almost all careers, be it of lawyers to doctors. One such profession is that of an engineer. An engineer’s profession comes with its own privileges and struggles and there are some Bollywood films that have tried to capture the essence of it all. From 3 Idiots to Tamasha, do not miss out on these films on Engineers Day.
The Rajkumar Hirani-directed 3 Idiots, featuring Aamir Khan, R.Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in lead roles was a blockbuster at the box office. It tells the tale of three young men who make their way into a prestigious engineering college where there is a race to come first. The movie culminates with these friends choosing different career paths and not giving in to the rat race prevalent in society. The film is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Tamasha is the 2015 Imitiaz Ali-directed psychological drama based on the life of Ved, played by Ranbir Kapoor in the film. Ved meets Tara (Deepika Padukone) during his trip to Corsica, which decides her future course of action. Tara is interested in Ved only to realize that he is an average middle-class engineer who has given in to the exploitations of society and his father’s ambition to become an engineer. He fails to prove his mettle in the engineering field and wants to become a storyteller. A must-watch that is available on Zee5.
Udaan is the 2010 directorial debut of Vikramaditya Motwane. The coming-of-age drama revolves around the life of a boy named Rohan, played by Rajat Barmecha. It is about his relationship with his stern and exploitative father named Bhairav Singh, played by Ronit Roy. His father aspires to be an engineer and forces him to attend engineering classes at the local university while Rohan wants to be a writer. Rohan later frees himself from the clutches of his exploitative father and finds his own way in the world. A must-watch on Netflix.
Satyakaam is a 1969 Hrishikesh Mukherjee-directed film adapted from a Bengali novel of the same name by Narayan Sanyal. It features Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Sanjeev Kumar and Ashok Kumar in lead roles. It tells the tale of Satyapriya, an engineer who is guided by his grandfather Dadaji Satyasharan Acharya’s spiritual beliefs. Satyapriya encounters many hurdles along his way to nation-building that do not seem to go with his beliefs and this takes a toll on his professional and marital life. A cinematic marvel, it beautifully depicts the dilemma one has to go through in terms of making decisions while living in a dishonest world.
Chhichhore is a 2019 romantic comedy directed by Nitesh Tiwari. It features Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Naveen Polishetty, Tushar Pandey and Saharsh Kumar Shukla. It depicts the pressure that young minds go through in their lives to achieve success. Though it tries from a serious premise, the film later takes a comedic turn and showcases the fun engineering students have during their college days. The film is available on Disney+Hotstar.
Taarzan: The Wonder Car
Taarzan features the story of Raj Choudhary played by Vatsal Seth and his ambition of rebuilding his dead father’s ambitious project. Ajay Devgn plays the role of his father who is an engineer and builds an ambitious project of a car named Taarzan. The film is now available on Disney+Hotstar.
