Ra.One to Brahmastra, films that made the best use of VFX
Bollywood is no stranger to making the best use of VFX to provide a memorable visual treat for audiences. Many films have made sure to use visual effects to delight viewers and whisk them away to a world where anything is possible. From superhero films with some over the top action sequences, to rendering superstars unrecognisable physically, VFX certainly has aided in bringing movie goers some surprises over the years. Here are a few Bollywood films that have done a stellar job in making the best use of VFX:
The forthcoming film Brahmastra starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt is the talk of the town these days. The Ayan Mukerji directed film is a mythological fantasy adventure. The trailer gives viewers a glimpse into how the makers used VFX for the film’s stunning action sequences and the portrayal of Ranbir as the new-age Superhero, Shiva. The film, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy, will be released on September 9.
Ra. One was one of the first Bollywood movies to usher in the new age Superheros of Bollywood. The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead role. Ra. One follows the story of a hero who comes to life from a videogame to fight its villain, played by Arun Rampla. The film is a struggle between good and evil, hero and villain, and uses unrealistic action sequences that were possible only because of VFX. The movie is available on Zee5 and eros now
Fan features Shah Rukh in a double role. It is a story of a fan obsessed with his look-alike celebrity. The action-thriller used technology and prosthetics transforms Shah Rukh into both a superstar and an obsessed young man. Though the film didn't fare well at the box office, it received a lot of praise for its VFX and new innovations.
Shah Rukh Khan again slips into the role of an unconventional hero in this Aanand L. Rai directorial. The film features Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anoushka Sharma in lead roles.
Shah Rukh plays the character of a dwarf from Meerut in the film. The excellent use of technology and VFX renders SRK unrecognisable as the short statured hero. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix.
Shivaay bagged the National Award for Best Visual Effects in 2016. The film portrays the life of Shivaay, a mountaineer, and his struggle to get back his daughter from the shackles of kidnappers.
Shivaay’s scenic beauty as well as its thrilling action sequences were made possible with VFX. The film has over the top action sequences happening at the top of mountains that were in actuality portrayed on sets, with the scenery being added through VFX . Watch it on Amazon Prime Video.
Aamir Khan starrer Dhoom 3 features the actor in a double role. The Yash Raj Films produced movie was a box office hit and was much praised for its use of VFX. The story centres around Aamir, a chief who runs a circus abroad. He finds himself being chased by international police and the chase makes the plotline of the movie.
The movie’s over the top action and chase sequences with Aamir’s double role required the art of VFX and the film made best use of it. The movie is available on Amazon Prime Video.
One of the first Superhero films ever to be made in India, Krrish stars Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. Krrish was the sequel of superhit film Koi Mil Gaya. The film created a trend for VFX and the superhero genre in Bollywood.
Krrish’s super realistic abilities are very popular amongst the audience and is a must watch for all cinephiles. The movie is available on SonyLiv.
