Bada Naam Karenge story: Bada Naam Karenge on SonyLIV marks Sooraj Barjatya's OTT debut. He is the showrunner of the series and it is directed by Palash Vaswani. Starring Ritik Ghanshani and Ayesha Kaduskar in the lead roles, the series shows a couple, Rishabh and Surbhi, exploring their love during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some situations set them apart but in a twist of fate, they again find themselves reunited when their families arrange their marriage, unaware of their existing connection. The series explores themes of love, family bonds, and Gen Z relationships and makes it a binge-watch.
Set in Ratlam, Mumbai, and Ujjain, Bada Naam Karenge is indeed a family watch as Sooraj Barjatya said in interviews. Ritik Ghanshani and Ayesha Kaduskar as Rishabh and Surbhi simply won the hearts with their on-screen chemistry.
The series opens with the scenarios of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Rishabh who is the son of the famous Shree Ganga Misthaan Bhandaar owner in Ratlam, stays in Mumbai for studies and a job. He meets Surbhi when he arranges a party at his Mumbai flat. Surbhi is a biology student who stays at her girls' hostel at her college. Surbhi and Rishabh did not know each other well. But after having some beverages, Surbhi feels sick and accidentally sleeps at Rishabh's house. In the meanwhile, the news channel shows that the Prime Minister of India announced a 21-day Lockdown to control COVID-19 cases.
Due to this, every transportation will be banned except in urgent cases. Surbhi who fell asleep did not know about this and woke up the next morning only to realize she couldn't get out of Rishabh's house due to the lockdown. This is how Rishabh and Surbhi's love eventually starts to grow.
Do not miss Jitendra Kumar's mesmerizing cameo as the owner of Choco and Cinnamon. He channels his inner Jeetu Bhaiya (Kota Factory character) with the role of Santosh Khandelwal. He appears for hardly 10 minutes and his presence again wins our hearts.
The direction as well as script writing warm the hearts as they try to show it as real as possible. However, before their love could grow fully, Surbhi goes back to her Ujjain house as her father had a minor heart attack.
The series, at times, reminds me of Gong Yoo's Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. Remember how Goblin wrote a poem for his wife (missing soul) using romantic references of rain, snow, leaves, and more? Likewise, in Bada Naam Karenge, Surbhi writes a poem where she says, "We will again meet someday. How, where, do not know. But we will meet." She also uses the same references as Goblin. This scene will indeed make you fall in love with the on-screen couple.
After some years, Rishabh and Surbhi again meet but this time, their families arrange for their marriage without knowing they already know each other. When they go to meet at a restaurant, Rishabh and Surbhi become shocked but they do not tell their families. The series is a beautiful example of a love-arranged marriage. Sooraj Barjatya who is known for family classics like Vivah, Hum Saath Saath Hai, and Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, brings a heartwarming family relationship blended with a Gen Z love story to the OTT platform.
Bada Naam Karenge also explores the hardships younger members face when the elder members force them to do something. Just like in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, we see Amitabh Bachchan's Yash Raichand who gets angry with his adopted son Rahul for his (Shah Rukh Khan) plea to marry a middle-class woman, Anjali (Kajol). The elder member rules the house without knowing what others actually want. Likewise, in Bada Naam Karenge, Rishabh's uncle (played by (Kanwaljit Singh) indeed reminds me of Big B's characters in K3G and Mohabbatein. However, towards the end, younger members make them realize that their elders can also be wrong.
When the families get to know that Risbhabh and Surbhi already know each other, they get upset and angry. After a lot of ups and downs, Rishabh's strict family realizes that the anger is doing nothing but affecting their family bonds. The series is rich in dialogues, music, and also brilliant acting performances. Although some scenes feel dragged, it get overshadowed by the romantic plot. The last scene of Bada Naam Karenge will simply melt your heart and make you want an in-law family like them.
Bada Naam Karenge, directed by Palash Vaswani, marks Sooraj Barjatya's OTT debut. The Gen Z love story of Rishabh and Surbhi makes us anticipate a genuine love in this tech and AI-obsessed era. The SonyLIV series starring Ritik Ghanshani and Ayesha Kaduskar beautifully shows the couple exploring love while keeping their families happy from every angle. The 9 episodic series hardly feels tedious. Although the narrative at times feels dragged, the overall plot hooks you into the series. If you are yearning for a heartwarming family romance drama this Valentine's week, Bada Naam Karenge should be on your watchlist immediately.
Meanwhile, Bada Naam Karenge is streaming on SonyLIV. You can also watch it with your OTTplay Premium subscription.
