Ziddi Girls Story: Amazon Prime Video's latest series, Ziddi Girls revolves around five students of Matilda House College. With the help of a group of Student leaders, these young freshers take on challenges, change norms, break barriers, and stand up for their beliefs. The title of the series aptly matches the theme. Ziddi means brave and these young women will do everything to prove themselves.
If Sanya Malhotra's Mrs. motivated you to break barriers and love yourself, then Shonali Bose's Ziddi Girls inspires you to do it more broadly. The narratives of both Mrs. and Ziddi Girls might be different but the theme remains the same and to be honest, this theme of young women getting attacked for breaking societal norms should be shown as rape and eve tease cases are rapidly increasing day by day.
Set in an elite Delhi institution, Matilda House, some young freshers join the college to live their dreams. The institution begins to make headlines from the beginning of the series as the freshers are shown a French movie on sex-ed by the seniors or the leaders of students. One of the freshers records the whole thing and sends it to her friend and the latter shares it on social media which becomes viral in no time. The Students' Leaders are accused of showing porn to the freshers. However, Paro (leader of the students) clarifies to the principal that it was just a French movie on sex ed.
Delightfully, the principal of the college always supports her students and in this case, she does the same and that is why she had to resign to welcome a new principal. However, things do not sit right with the students when they realize the new principal is trying to snatch their freedom by making the curfew at 7 pm which means girls cannot go out after 7 pm from the MH hostel.
This is the beginning of all the 'zid' by the leaders and the freshers while some students remain reactionless. These young women who want to live their life to the fullest are controlled by the authority but they refuse to be silenced. They do not tolerate wrong deeds and to make it right, they go to the extreme extent. The series teaches us not to be afraid of anyone in the world and to choose to love ourselves and listen to our hearts.
During a stage show, when a student is betrayed by her mentor because the latter shows the girl naked in front of a huge crowd despite promising that nothing will happen, proves how a girl's respect can be ignored like it never exists. When the leaders take revenge on the matter, they are harassed by some people of a reputed association who are against these girls.
During this harassment, Paro's head is hit by an object and she undergoes treatment. Then begins the justice slogan. As we see, in this generation, a lot of cases like Paro take place, i.e., Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College's rape case for which the justice plea is still going on. Likewise, the end of the Ziddi Girls also shows how girls are attacked by the same association once again and the new principal along with other professors tries their best to save their students.
Meanwhile, the cast of the college drama features Atiya Tara Nayak, Umang Bhadana, Zaina Ali, Deeya Damini and Anupriya Caroli along with acclaimed actors Simran, Nandita Das, Nandish Singh Sandhu, Lillete Dubey and Revathy. The series is produced by Pritish Nandy under the name of Pritish Nandy Communications Ltd.
Directed by Shonali Bose, Neha Veena Sharma, and Vasant Nath, Ziddi Girls strongly holds the significance of 'zid' (boldness). The series shows how young women should not stop dreaming because they are asked to be silenced. It generates strong power to become a 'ziddi' girl. Even though you face obstacles, never break your inner will to break barriers and that's what the series tries to teach us. After a strong narrative of Sanya Malhotra's Mrs., Ziddi Girls is also a must-watch series that is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
