Gus Atkinson's fourth five-wicket haul ensured India were bundled out for only 224 in the first inning of the fifth test. Atkinson, who was making a return to the English team, returned with 33/5 to help the hosts recover from the waveyard bowling they had done on Day 1.

Karun Nair, who scored only the second fifty of his test career, could not add that much to his overnight total. Josh Tongue, who had already gone for nine in his first over, trapped Nair in front of the wicket.

Nair was expecting a short ball, but the full-length incoming delivery surprised him. Nair took the DRS in the hope of a miracle, but it was hitting the middle of the leg stump. After Nair was dismissed on 57, England just ran through the Indian lower order.
Five balls after Nair's dismissal, Washington Sundar (26) wanted to break the shackles and handed a catch to Jamie Overton in the deep mid-wicket while trying to pull a short ball.
Atinkson then completed his five-wicket haul by rattling the stumps of Mohammed Siraj before he produced an edge from Prasidh Krishna's bat.
India's 224 is now the lowest inning total in this series. Atkinson, with a bowling average of 21, is now the fourth best as an England seamer with fifty or more wickets.
