India vs England 2nd Test Day 2: India have gone winless in the past eight matches at Edgbaston, Birmingham, and Shubman Gill and his men would be hoping to break that jinx

Eight matches and zero wins - that’s how India’s record at Edgbaston, Birmingham reads, stretching back to their first match in 1967 at the venue. The only consolation draw in their eight previous outings came in 1986, when both teams could have pushed for victory, only to be denied by 48 minutes of bad light and rain after tea.
The first day of the second test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has India in another precarious situation at 310/5. After having put into bat by England, the Indian team had a fluctuating day - mixed with some great strokeplay from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Karun Nair and patience from their captain Shubman Gill, only to be outdone by some poor shots by Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy and inspired field placements from Gill’s opposite number Ben Stokes.
At close of Day 1, Gill, who stays unbeaten at 114, and Ravindra Jadeja, 41, have stitched together a partnership of 99 runs. The Indian think-tank would want the duo to carry on and get the team closer to 400+ runs and be in a position to control the match.
This is all the more crucial, with the Indian lower order, collapsing in the previous two innings, and them not having the service of their frontline pacer Jasprit Bumrah in this match. The latter was rested as part of his workload management. A decision that didn’t go down well with previous coach Ravi Shastri, who suggested that if he was hit, he should have played.
Either way, Gill would be hoping that he and his team bat as long as possible on Day 2, to give his bowling attack that comprises Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna along with spin-bowling allrounders Jadeja and Washington Sundar enough protection.
As India looks to build an advantage and take control of the game as well as register their first win under Gill’s captaincy, you can stream all the action live as well as the pre-match analysis and highlights on JioHotstar, available via OTTplay Premium.
