On a historic night at the Wankhede Stadium, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav broke the record of Virat Kohli as he led India into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup semi-final against England on Thursday. As the Mumbaikar stepped onto the field for the toss, he officially marked his 51st match as India's T20I captain, moving past the legendary Virat Kohli to claim the 3rd spot on the all-time list of most matches as Indian captain in the shortest format of the game.

SKY goes past Kohli

While Virat Kohli's captaincyera (2017-2021) in the shortest format was defined by aggression and focus on fitness regime, Suryakumar Yadav brought a sense of calm chaos and freedom.

Suryakumar's achievement not only separates him from other captains in terms of volume, but it also underscores his rapid ascent as a leader in recent years.

Earlier this month, Suryakumar also went past Kohli's record for the most Player of the Match awards for India in T20Is, which also further cemented his status as one of India's premier T20 players ever.

Most matches as captain for India in T20Is

MS Dhoni still has the record for the most matches as the captain of India in T20Is. The former captain, who won the 2007 T20 World Cup, led the team in 72 games in the shortest format.

Rohit Sharma, the T20 World Cup 2024 winner as a captain, follows him on the list with 62 games as the captain. Kohli comes in fourth position with 50 matches as T20I captain for India.

Rank Captain Matches
1 MS Dhoni 72
2 Rohit Sharma 62
