India and Pakistan have faced each other in 12 cricket finals, with Pakistan winning 8 times and India winning 4 times. These finals span from the mid-1980s to 2017, showcasing one of cricket's most intense rivalries.
The earliest final clash was on March 10, 1985, in Melbourne at the Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket, where India defeated Pakistan by 8 wickets. Ravi Shastri and Kris Srikkanth scored fifties for India during the chase.
A year later, on April 18, 1986, Pakistan edged out India in the final of the Austral-Asia Cup in Sharjah by a narrow 1-wicket margin. Pakistan needed four runs to win the match off the last ball. Javed Miandad hit a six off Chetan Sharma to win.
Pakistan’s dominance continued as they defeated India by 72 runs in the finals of the Wills Trophy on October 25, 1991, also at Sharjah. Three years later, at the same venue, Pakistan again defeated India in the Pepsi Austral-Asia Cup final by 39 runs.
The following finals witnessed a mix of wins for both sides through the 1990s. One of the most notable series of finals was in January 1998, held in Dhaka, where India showed strong form by winning the Silver Jubilee Independence Cup by defeating Pakistan by 8 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar scored a stunning 95 on that final.
In April 1999, Sharjah hosted another final between the two teams, where Pakistan emerged victorious in the Coca-Cola Cup by 8 wickets, demonstrating their dominance during that era.
The last time India and Pakistan played in a final was in the 2017 Champions Trophy, where India lost by a huge margin of 180 runs. At Oval, Pakistan scored 338/4 with Fakhar Zaman scoring 114 with the bat.
In reply, India were bowled out for 158. Despite a valiant effort from Hardik Pandya, who was run out on 76 from 43 balls, India lost the match by 180 runs.
