The Indian men's cricket team created and repeated history by defeating every odd against them in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final as they demolished New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. India thrashed New Zealand by 96 runs to lift their third T20 World Cup title and become the most successful team in the history of the tournament.

After India were asked to bat first by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, Indian openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson gave India a great start to help them reach 92 without losing any wickets in the power play. Abhishek Sharma, who was short of runs throughout the entire campaign, scored an 18-ball 50, the fastest of this campaign. Sanju Samson added 89 runs from 46 deliveries while becoming only the second Indian batter, other than Virat Kohli, to score a 50 in both the semi-final and final of a T20 World Cup edition.
Although Jimmy Neesham broke through India's middle order, it was Shivam Dube's 26 off 8 deliveries that helped India reach 255/5 in the first innings.

India dominated with the ball in hand in the second innings as New Zealand openers tried to give the visitors a great start with the bat. Finn Allen and Tim Seifert's wickets were always going to be crucial, and it was two Gujarat men who helped India deliver with discipline.

Axar Patel (27/3) and Jasprit Bumrah (15/4) broke through the New Zealand top order before Bumrah finished off the game with a man-of-the-match performance.
Sanju Samson won the Player of the Series award for scoring 321 runs, the second highest of the tournament, and the most by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup edition.
