The start wasn't what the Mumbai Indians (MI) had hoped for, particularly concerning the player fans had eagerly gathered at the Wankhede Stadium to see - Rohit Sharma. In Match 14 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, MI suffered a setback losing two quick wickets - Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir - in successive deliveries in the very first over against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Trent Boult started the innings on a high note as Rohit Sharma was sent back on the 5th ball. It was a fine catch by RR skipper and keeper Sanju Samson. The delivery was short of a length outside off, and Rohit had a poke at it. He got a thick outside edge, and Samson dived to his right and took a one-handed catch. Sharma departs without troubling the scorers.

Most ducks in IPL:

17 - Rohit Sharma*

17 - Dinesh Karthik

15 - Glenn Maxwell

15 - Piyush Chawla

15 - Mandeep Singh

15 - Sunil Narine

Shortly after Naman Dhir took to the crease, he swiftly walked back after facing just one ball, marking two wickets in two deliveries. The delivery, a length around the middle and leg, angled back in, catching Dhir on the pads and resulting in an LBW decision. The batter went for a review and the decision stood in favour of the on-field umpire as the ball was pitching in line, impacting in line, and the bails were clipping the top of leg stump.

Following Dhir's departure, MI made an impact substitution, bringing in Dewald Brevis. However, his stay was brief as Boult dismissed him for a duck as well in his next over. The delivery, pitched on a length outside off, shaped back into the batsman. Brevis attempted a drive, but the outside edge flew straight to short third man, where Burger held onto the catch.

As of writing this article, MI kept losing wickets as opener Ishan Kishan also departed for 16 off 14 balls. MI now has scored 30 but lost their top 4 within 5 overs.

At the toss, Rajasthan Royals win the toss and opt to bowl. They make one change as Sandeep Sharma misses out as he is not fit and Nandre Burger comes in. For MI, they go with an unchanged squad.
