In Match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, fans were treated to a thrilling display of batting prowess as the home side, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), set a monumental total of 277 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium against the Mumbai Indians (MI). This saw them clinch the highest total recorded in an IPL game, surpassing the previous record held by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

SRH surpassed RCB's previously held milestone of 263 runs, set on April 23, 2013, against the Pune Warriors (PW), with Chris Gayle's phenomenal knock of 175 runs off 66 balls. However, now RCB fans want another feat to be taken from them - their record for the lowest team total - 49 runs - achieved while chasing Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) target of 131 runs at Eden Gardens on April 23, 2017.

SRH vs MI highlight:

In the clash, Mayank Agarwal's early departure for 11 runs did not deter SRH's momentum, as Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) unleashed a relentless assault on the MI bowlers. Post their wickets, it was an Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen show as the duo from South Africa stitched a remarkable 116-run partnership. Despite the efforts of Hardik Pandya, Gerald Coetzee, and Piyush Chawla to secure wickets for MI, SRH's batters dominated, sending the ball soaring over the boundaries with ease.

For MI, the chase began strongly, amassing 85 runs before losing the wickets of Rohit Sharma (26) and Ishan Kishan (34) during the Powerplay. Nevertheless, Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma led a spirited recovery for the Mumbai franchise, displaying aggressive stroke play and keeping the required run rate at pace. Varma's aggressive approach, particularly against the spinners, saw him reach a well-deserved 50 with a flurry of sixes.

However, SRH's captain, Pat Cummins, struck a crucial blow by dismissing Varma just after the strategic time-out. Post that, it was a downhill despite the efforts from Hardik and Tim David as the SRH pacers proved too formidable, securing a 31-run victory for their team.
