Who is Kartik Sharma? CSK's replacement plan for MS Dhoni?

Kartik Sharma is a dynamic right-handed wicketkeeper-batter who has risen rapidly through Rajasthan's domestic ranks. Known for his explosive lower-order hitting and clean striking, the teenager has impressed with a T20 strike rate exceeding 160. In the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), he scored 133 runs in five innings at a blistering rate, often turning games with late-order cameos.

The 19-year-old from Rajasthan, entering with a base price of just ₹30 lakh, sparked an intense bidding war involving Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. CSK, however, refused to back down, outlasting KKR and a late surge from SRH to land their man.

His versatility as a reliable glove-man and finisher made him a prime target. Experts highlight his calm temperament, reminiscent of a certain CSK legend, and ability to accelerate under pressure like MS Dhoni.

Minutes earlier, CSK had set the record by acquiring another uncapped talent, 20-year-old all-rounder Prashant Veer, for the same ₹14.20 crore. The five-time champions spent a combined ₹28.40 crore on the duo, signalling a bold shift towards youth after a challenging 2025 season.

MS Dhoni's future replacement?

With MS Dhoni confirmed to play IPL 2026 at age 44, the acquisition of Kartik has fuelled speculation that CSK are grooming a long-term successor behind the stumps.

Dhoni, retained for ₹4 crore, remains the team's spiritual leader and will likely mentor the youngster closely.

CSK also added West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein for ₹2 crore, but the spotlight was firmly on their investments in Indian youth. The franchise, entering with one of the largest purses, is rebuilding around captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dhoni while injecting fresh energy.

Fans erupted on social media, with many hailing Kartik as a "15-year investment" and potential finisher in yellow. CSK's strategy marks a departure from their "Dad's Army" tag, focusing on high-potential domestic talents who could define the post-Dhoni era.
