In a major boost for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana has been announced fit to take part in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The news comes as a huge sigh of relief for the KKR management, who had been sweating over the availability of their high-priced auction investment.
Pathirana, who was bought by KKR for a staggering ₹18 crore, sustained a calf strain during Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup clash against Australia. The injury forced him out of the rest of that tournament, where Sri Lanka’s campaign finally ended in the Super 8s.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) secretary Bandula Dissanayake confirmed to PTI that the 23-year-old has completed his rehabilitation.
"As far as I know, he's fit, and we have given him NOC to participate in the IPL. He has completed rehab, but the franchise will be tasked to assess his readiness," Dissanayake said.
The timing of Pathirana’s return is vital. KKR recently faced a significant setback with Harshit Rana being ruled out for most of the season following knee surgery. Further, the team had to part ways with Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman due to external BCCI directives, subsequently signing Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani as his substitute.
