In the world of Indian cricket, the number 7 is more than just a number. It is a brand, a legacy, and for millions of fans, a faith. However, a cryptic social media post from legendary former captain MS Dhoni has indicated that the impossible might be happening. MS Dhoni might switch to Jersey Number 8 during IPL 2026, which is all set to commence from 28 March, 2026.
Taking to Facebook on Tuesday, the 44-year-old Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon dropped a bombshell that has left the Chennai Super Kings fans and the wider cricketing world searching for answers.
"Some numbers stay with you. 7 has always been one of them. But today, I’m switching to 8. You’ll know why soon," Dhoni wrote.
Since his senior India debut in 2004, Dhoni has been synonymous with the number 7, a choice inspired by his birth date, i.e. July 7.
The jersey was officially "retired" by the BCCI in late 2023 as a tribute to Dhoni's contribution to Indian cricket, meaning no other Indian player can ever wear it again.
For Dhoni to move away from this essence just weeks before the IPL 2026 season kicks off has sparked intense controversy.
The timing of the post is quite inquisitive given recent comments from South African legend AB de Villiers.
Speaking on JioHotstar, de Villiers voiced frustration with Dhoni’s preference to bat lower down the order (at No. 8 or 9) during the previous few seasons.
"I don't see a role for him batting at eight or nine... he needs to bat higher, at least at six," de Villiers stated, meaning that Dhoni’s presence should be about more than just maintaining the "CSK brand." Some fans are now speculating if the "Switch to 8" is a bold nod to his batting position rather than a literal jersey change.
While the "Thala" supporters are in a state of mourning over the potential loss of the iconic No. 7, veteran social media onlookers are leaning toward a marketing campaign.
Dhoni has a history of using cryptic teasers for brand endorsements, most notably his "New Role" post before the IPL 2024 season, which turned out to be a promotional tie-in.
There is also a theory that he is chasing an 8th overall T20 title (including Champions League and IPL), which is why MS Dhoni is going for jersey No. 8.
