More than Gambhir and Rohit: KL Rahul goes past these two Indian openers in Ahmedabad

In the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad, KL Rahul notched his 11th Test century as an opener, surpassing Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma’s records for openers, both of whom had 10.

With his 11th test century against the West Indies in the first test of the series in Ahmedabad on Friday, Indian opener KL Rahul went past current head coach Gautam Gambhir and former test captain Rohit Sharma’s record as an opener. Rahul, who has 10 test centuries as an opener, now has more test tons than the two former Indian test openers.

10th test ton for Rahul as an opener

KL Rahul, who had a stunning England series with the bat, continued his tremendous form at the top of the order for India in the first test of the series against the West Indies at Ahmedabad. After India bundled out the visitors for 162 in the first inning, Rahul looked steady, like always, as India came to bat in the last session of Day 1.

Rahul found the gaps every West Indies pacers erred in line and length, and meantime his solid defence and soft hands allowed him to negate the good deliveries as well. The Indian opener, who had a tough last few years, missed a home series against England due to injuries and had to play nearly at every batting position available, settled again as an opener with a century.

The Indian opener had scored his last test century at home in 2016 in Chennai, and it took him nine long years to get his second century at home as he found the gap against Roston Chase in the first session of Day 2.

With his third test century of 2025, and 11th of his career, 10th as an opener, he has now surpassed the record of current India head coach Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma, who had scored 9 test centuries as an opener for India.

Sunil Gavaskar has the record of scoring the most test centuries for India as an opener with 33 tons at the top of the order. Meantime, Virender Sehwag, who was the first Indian to score a triple ton in test cricket, scored 22 test centuries as an opener.

Murali Vijay has 12 test centuries against his name, and now KL Rahul follows him with 11 test centuries as an opener for India.
