In a remarkable turn of events, the year 2025 witnessed a historic first in international cricket: a parent and child playing together in the same international match. Never before had cricket seen such an occurrence at the international level until this unprecedented milestone was achieved twice in 2025, marking a new chapter in cricketing history.

The first groundbreaking instance occurred when the father-son duo of Suhail Sattar, aged 50, and his 17-year-old son, Yahya Suhail, represented Timor-Leste.
Both made their international debuts in the same match during Timor-Leste’s first-ever international T20 match against Indonesia held on November 6, 2025, at the Udayana Cricket Ground in Bali.
This Southeast Asian nation, relatively new to the international cricket arena, marked its debut with Suhail senior and junior walking out together on the pitch, creating history not only for their family but also for their country.
Suhail Sattar, the senior, scored 14 runs, while young Yahya played a powerful six off his only ball before being dismissed. However, Timor-Leste faced a tough initiation, bowled out for 61 runs, and eventually lost the match by 10 wickets.
Beyond Timor-Leste, familial links in cricket have made headlines before; for instance, West Indies legends Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son Tagenarine shared the field for Guyana in first-class cricket, and recently, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi played against his son Hassan Eisakhil in a T20 domestic league final.
However, Sattar and Suhail’s achievement marks the very first time a father and son have taken the field together in an official international cricket match.
Adding to this remarkable story, 2025 also saw a mother-daughter duo debuting together for Switzerland’s women’s cricket team.
Metty Fernandes, aged 45, and her 16-year-old daughter, Naina Metty Saju, made their debut in the same match, leaving their mark on the international stage.
This inspiring moment highlights the growing influence and recognition of women’s cricket globally and the unique opportunities for family members across generations to play side by side.
