Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 64 from 37 balls helped Sri Lanka reach 168/7 in the first inning of the 1st Super Four match of the Asia Cup 2025 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Saturday.

What happened?

Bangladesh captain Litton Das won the toss and elected to field first on a batting-friendly pitch. Sri Lanka began strongly, with Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka scoring early boundaries. However, Bangladesh responded well in the power play, taking Nissanka’s wicket in the fifth over.

Sri Lanka lost momentum as Bangladeshi spinners controlled the middle overs. Mehadi Hasan dismissed Kusal Mendis (34) and Kamil Mishara in consecutive overs, limiting Sri Lanka to 72/3 after 10 overs.

Experienced bowler Mustafizur Rahaman continued to restrict Sri Lanka’s scoring before Dasun Shanaka, the former Sri Lankan captain, entered the crease. Shanaka and Charith Asalanka’s 57-run partnership off 27 balls for the fifth wicket provided a strong foundation for Sri Lanka’s total.

Although Mustafizur was able to get a few quick wickets after Asalanka’s dismissal, Shanaka’s unbeaten 64 from 37 balls, including six sixes, helped Sri Lanka reach a respectable 168/7 in the first inning. Mustafizur returned with 20/3 in the four overs and also equalled the record for most T20I wickets for Bangladesh.
