It's that time of the year when the fiery sun that that has been shining in all its glory takes a breather and little drops of rain arrive to quench the thirst of the earth. As the clouds hover on top and tend to take on a darker tone, the scent of the earthy soil begins to waft in the air. After a long spell of dry, weather, the first drops of rain are a reason enough to celebrate . And the rain not only quenches the thirst of earth, but also washes down our sorrows, at least for the time being. Here are a few songs that romance the rain, composed by none other than Isai Puyal AR Rahman.

Thenmerku Paruvakaatru

Set in a rural backdrop in Theni district, this upbeat number from Bharathiraaja's Karuthamma makes you shake a leg along with the lead actors Maheshwari and Raja. The next time you are in the countryside, make sure you listen to this peppy song by KS Chithra and Unnikrishnan and dance like there is no tomorrow.

Uyire

Easily one of the most popular songs of the '90s, this duet from Mani Ratnam's Bombay, is sung by Hariharan and KS Chithra. The romantic number was shot against the rainwashed Bekal Fort in Kasargod, Kerala and features Aravind Swami and Mani Ratnam, finally, baring their hearts out expressing their love for each other.

Chotta Chotta Nanaiyuthu

The meldious number sung by Srinivas begins with a miniature version of Taj Mahal getting drenched in the rain. Even as everyone around the market run for cover, Manoj Bharathiraaja is seen lovingly looking at the monument and asking where his ladylove was. As the tempo of the beats go higher, it's time to dance along.

Chinna Chinna Mazhaithuligal

What do you do when you are walking by the road and it suddenly starts raining? If you are a pluviophile, and loves to listen to the rhythm of the falling rain, you will sing and dance in the rain. That's exactly what Arvind Swami and Isha Koppikhar do in this song by MG Sreekumar, featured in En Swasa Kaatre.

Enge En Punnagai

A graceful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is seen dancing to her heart's tunes along with her friends amid lush greenery in this lilting number featured in Subhash Ghai's Thaalam. The song sung by Shoba Shankar and SP Balasubramanyam features Akshaye Khanna as well. Lyrics are by Vairamuthu.

Than Kannamma A dreamy Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is seen meeting her love, Abbas, for the first time in this melody tuned to the lines of Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiyar. The song featured in Rajiv Menon's Kandukondein Kandukondein is a treat to the eyes and years. Hariharan's melliflous rendition is just the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

With the rain and the tremulous strain of Swarnalatha's voice, also descends a pall of gloom and anguish in the air. And just like the turbulent hearts of Madhavan and Shalini in Mani Ratnam's Alaipayuthey, the spell of storm, finally unites the two lovers, who finally confess their love for each other.

This joyous number sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Uday Mazumdar from Mani Ratnam's Guru, has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan dancing and pedalling through the countryside. As a village belle, she makes the most of the pitter-patter and makes us get up and groove along with her. Lyrics are by Vairamuthu.
