As Indians, Bollywood has always been a significant part of our lives. All of us have had grandparents and parents who love to watch and re-watch their old favourite movies with their children in tow. On Sundays, many families would gather and relive the golden era of Indian cinema on cable TV and share a laugh. But today; we’re part of the OTT generation and we like our movies streamed on demand just when we can spare a few hours to take in that evergreen comedy or that unforgettable family drama. Here are a few of our yesteryear Hindi favourites that can be streamed anytime on OTT platforms:Bombay to Goa (1972)Bombay to Goa is one of the first road trip movies in Hindi cinema. With an ensemble cast comprising stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Mehmood, Aruna Irani, Mehmood Junior, Anwar Ali, Shatrughan Sinha, Keshto Mukherjee and more, Bombay to Goa was a laugh-riot. A young woman, Mala, played by Aruna Irani, witnesses a murder and escapes to Goa on a bus comprising a motley team of co-passengers. The movie is based entirely on the events that occur during the journey and the oddball characters that feature in it. You can watch Bombay to Goa on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ to truly understand and appreciate the appeal of a young Amitabh Bachchan.Chupke Chupke (1975)Chupke Chupke is one of the most wholesome family comedy movies ever made. Sulekha, played by Sharmila Tagore, is in awe of her brother-in-law’s intelligence and cannot stop gushing over him, much to her husband Parimal’s (Dharmendra) chagrin. Parimal decides to pull a fast one on his brother-in-law as a challenge by pretending to be his chauffeur. What follows is a rib-tickling, observational comedy of errors that will leave you in splits. Stream this film featuring Om Prakash, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Asrani in supporting roles, only on Amazon Prime Video.Chhoti Si Baat (1976)
There isn’t a single Amol Palekar comedy movie that is not enjoyable and relatable. In Chhoti Si Baat he plays a young man named Arun Pradeep, who cannot express his feelings towards Prabha. We have all been Arun once in our life, in need of self-confidence to express our love. The movie follows Arun’s many attempts to woo Prabha with the help of Col. Julius Nagendra Wilfred Singh, played by the veteran actor Ashok Kumar. You can watch Chhoti Si Baat on Disney+Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video.Gol Maal (1979)
Gol Maal is yet another classic comedy movie that showcases the brilliance of Amol Palekar. In the film, he plays a young man who hopes to win over his girlfriend’s (Bindiya Goswami’s) father (the inimitable Utpal Dutt). The only problem – his girlfriend’s father is looking for a sanskaari dhoti-kurta clad, moustache sporting groom for his daughter. As it turns out, the elderly gent abhors modern, moustache-less men. What ensues is a laugh riot and a comedy of errors that will make you laugh so much you might even break into tears. The film also features comedy geniuses such as Deven Verma, Shubha Khote, and Keshto Mukherjee in supporting roles. Catch this movie on SonyLIV, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube. They don’t make them like these movies anymore!
