House Mates star Aarsha Chandini Baiju Interview

Other industries may have offered you with several opportunities before House Mates. Why did you decide to make your Tamil debut with this film?

Firstly, the movie was backed by an esteemed team under the leadership of Siva Karthikeyan, and secondly, my character had plenty of room to act. Even though I had previously received offers from the same industry with the release of Mukundan Unni Associates, this was the ideal opportunity I had been waiting for. The most fulfilling part of the whole experience was receiving such positive comments from a lot of people, especially SK Sir himself. Overall, I felt that my first foray into this industry was worthwhile. For my debuts, I have also been fortunate enough to collaborate with reputable production companies, such as Pathinettam Padi in Malayalam.

Numerous small, family-oriented films that give the female leads plenty of space to shine are currently being released in Tamil cinema. What do you think about it?

It's true! This year is the ideal illustration of how even modest films can achieve success in any industry. In the meanwhile, I think that being a part of commercial films has advantages of its own in terms of popularity. For example, my career took a new turn when I was a part of Thudarum. In the past, mostly youngsters used to recognise me. Many people now identify me as Mary or as George Sir's daughter from the Mohanlal-starrer.

Thudarum provided you with an important boost following a brief hiatus, correct?

I consider every single movie I've worked on to be a turning point in my career. Even though I didn't get much screen time in Thudarum, it left a lasting impression. Like everyone else, I was especially committed to giving this project my all. Because people were able to sympathise to my character as much as I did when I played her, Mary holds a special place in my heart. Its director, Tharun Moorthy's guidance also helped me a lot in understanding the character.

A film that changed you as a performer?

I have the opportunity to evolve as a performer thanks to the Malayalam series, Average Ambili. It was a fantastic opportunity for me, particularly during the Covid-19 lockdown times, and it had a unique character graph. We had a lot of busy shoots and crew restrictions, which really helped me understand more about filmmaking.

A film or genre that you would love to do anytime?

A sports drama and possibly a dance-based movie would be my dream projects. A Tamil sports film was given to me, but it didn't really work out. I enjoy playing unconventional characters, such as Meenakshi from Mukundan Unni Associates. Despite the fact that I could never identify to her on any level, I felt it was quite easy portraying her. Even though I was first doubtful and kept asking Abhinav, the director, if this or that dialogue would be well received by the crowd, I enjoyed working in the film. Fortunately, viewers responded well to the character in spite of her negative undertone.

Your upcoming films?

In Malayalam, I have a fantasy comedy titled Pluto, starring Neeraj Madhav, Althaf Salim and Aju Varghese. The shooting of an unannounced Tamil film is ongoing.
