Arjun Das, last seen in Good Bad Ugly, talks about his upcoming rural drama Bomb which is set to release in theatres on September 12

After films like Kaithi, Master and Andhaghaaram, it is evident that young actor Arjun Das has distinctively stepped out of the zone that he was confined within then - gritty, action-oriented, and negative roles. Subsequently, he played a level-headed character in Por, a much-subtler in Loners (from Putham Pudhu Kaalai Vidiyaadhaa), a mysterious person in Rasavathi, and a quirky antagonist(s) in Good Bad Ugly. Now, Arjun Das is set to star in a rural social satire film Bomb, which is ready for release on September 12.

Arjun Das says that life has been kind, and so are the audience, directors and producers, as he is looking forward to having two releases in September, Bomb and Pawan Kalyan’s OG on September 25. It is evident that he does not want to be boxed within one type of role, but Arjun Das says that only with each passing film, when the industry sees an actor in a different way, the confidence builds for actors to try out different roles. “I am consciously choosing to stay away from negative and angry young man roles, and want to work with different directors, technicians under various genres. It is different for each film,” he adds.

Back to Bomb, Arjun Das plays Manimuthu in Vishal Venkat’s Bomb, a social political satire. The actor goes on to say, “People even found Johnny and Jammy from Good Bad Ugly, funny, that at one point many comedy scripts and some romance began to come my way. But Manimuthu is an innocent and vulnerable guy. Everyone in the movie has hit him. There are a lot of emotions in him and he is very kind. It is not a hero-hero film. I am just a part of a story which has multiple characters.”
Arjun Das also said that a director needs to look at an actor in a different way and come up with a script. “When Kaithi, Master and Andhaghaaram had happened, it was Halitha (Shameem) who saw me differently with Loners. And when the audience saw me, I landed up with a love story called Once More,” Arjun says as he adds that he is willing to experiment apart from staying away from villain roles unless they are really good. Revealing that his line-up is now looking different, far from being dark and negative-shaded characters, Arjun Das feels that ever since Master, the roles he has been getting have taken a unique turn with versatile characters.

The actor says he completely relies on his directors to get the maximum input about his characters, ever since Andhaghaaram. “Like in the case of GBU, I relied on Adhik to help me differentiate between Jammy and Johnny, the little facial expressions and body language. The technicians also contribute to it. With Bomb, Vishal said to me how Manimuthu walks, and talks, how he does not make eye contact when he talks.” Arjun Das goes on to say that he ‘never wants to take credits’ for any of the roles he has played so far, but the writers, directors, and audience for accepting.
Be it Master, Kaithi, GBU or even upcoming OG, Arjun Das has shared screen space with stalwarts who evidently enjoy a massive fanbase. “It is hard when you are part of big star films because you can go unnoticed or viewers may not like you, but I have been grateful for people having liked me in all these films. But it also helps me because all these stars have a massive fanbase, and you reach a wider audience. So, when I do a solo film, I hope they will come to see me as well.”
Speaking about OG, Arjun Das says, “When I meet director Sujeeth, I really liked what he narrated to me. I liked his Saaho and other films and said I want to collaborate with him sometime. So, when I got the chance to work with Pawan Kalyan sir, why not take it up? Unfortunately, I cannot talk much about the role, but I am hoping it will be different.”
The actor also has Once More with Aditi Shankar, which he says is free of blood-shed and violence. “It is pure love story and very light-hearted. I am hoping that you will get to see it within this year,” he signs off.
