How relatable do you find Savio in Chatha Pacha, and how would you characterise him?
The narrative centres on Savio's friendship with two of his childhood buddies, and how he leads an ordinary existence around them. When it comes to placing a high value on friendship in life, he is eventually more or less like me. I used to be like that, but gradually a lot of my close friends moved to other countries and some of them became less significant in my life. Whenever I can, I still travel to Dubai or other places to spend time with my close pals.
With back-to-back releases last year, you were rather busy. How does it work for you?
To be honest, I'm starting to get concerned about back-to-back releases. Several of the films that premiered last year were made a long time ago. It may or may not work with the audience now, even if we committed to it based on our judgement at that time. I am affected by this, as is the entire team of those films. The only movies that were actually filmed last year were Chatha Pacha and Thalavara.
How has your perspective on films evolved over time?
I believe that my focus has increased, and I no longer feel desperate enough to commit to every other project or small roles. My goal is to improve as an actor; it doesn't have to be a hero; it can be any movie that allows me to perform. When we perform hits, people advise us to concentrate on making just good ones. However, I am only able to select the opportunities that are presented to me.
I now make an effort to be picky. However, I still find it difficult to say no to a lot of people. Meanwhile, there are filmmakers that I accept right away without even reading the screenplay or being aware of what character I am playing. For instance, Soubin Shahir, Rahul Sadasivan, Midhun Manuel Thomas and Ahammed Khabeer.
You became widely recognised thanks to Romancham and Bramayugam. Did you work harder for these roles?
These two films undoubtedly increased my popularity and gave me a career breakthrough. Even Thalavara falls into this category, but it wasn't until its OTT release that it became more well-known.
But in terms of effort, I would say Abraham Ozler was more demanding because, despite the little screen, I spent three weeks preparing for my part in it. I was careful to do it well because it was a half-day shoot with a legend like Jayaram. As part of my preparations, I had looked into the behaviour of someone who had OD'd and subsequently recovered. For the remaining characters, I just went with the flow, and for some, it was simpler to get into the clothing or makeup of those parts.
There will be a sequel for both Romancham and Abraham Ozler. Which one is more thrilling to you?
Both, in my opinion! While Ozler would allow me to further prepare, Romancham would be an enjoyable experience. Curious and excited, I keep asking both directors for any updates. I am also eager to watch the interesting projects that Jithu Madhavan and Midhun Manuel Thomas are currently working on.
Do you think you be playing some quirky characters in 2026 based on the lineup announced so far?
Sort of! In Moonwalk, I'm portraying a more extreme version of my character in Romancham. Despite the fact that I only have four or five scenes, it is a compelling one to keep an eye out for. Then I committed to two very distinct roles in Disco and Bro Code. I also have a spoof movie with Arun Gopy productions. Once more, I have back-to-back films this year, but at the end of the day, it's all about films, and I really love being a part of it.
