Ishan Shoukath, a young Malayalam actor, became widely recognised for his role 'Victor' in Marco, Unni Mukundan's biggest hit. The star is now on cloud nine due to the positive response he is garnering for his performance in the latest sports action drama, Chatha Pacha. Ishan discussed his acting career which includes his upcoming film, Patriot, and how he handles criticism in an interview with OTTplay.

'Working in a Mahesh Narayanan film'

Ishan emphasised that he wouldn't be able to share many details regarding his role in Patriot. "I was offered a role in Mahesh Narayanan's Patriot just after Marco. It felt like a dream come true to be involved in this project. I consider myself lucky to have been given this chance because the technical team and cast are so excellent. I would have easily said yes, even if it had been a fleeting scene," he remarked. The multi-starrer political thriller will release on April 23.

'Never planned to be an actor'

Despite being involved in sports and artistic activities at school, the actor stated that he never intended to pursue a career in acting. "I worked on myself because I wanted to play basketball. But the plans were altered by an injury. Theatre eventually became my haven," he remarked. Ishan continued by saying that he was inspired to get involved in this artform through his brothers' passion for movies. "As an assistant director, I collaborated with Roshan Andrews, which helped me a lot in developing an understanding of what cinema is. Additionally, it helped me feel at ease with the camera," he said.

Deadline, a short film made by his brother Shihan Shoukath, which was chosen for the Cannes Film Festival, marked his acting debut. It also gave Ishan a reputation which later helped him in bagging a role in Marco.

'Dance sequence in Padakkalam garnering mixed response'

Ishan disclosed that he had only been practicing for a few days and was not a trained classical dancer. "I am receptive to criticism, provided it is from reliable sources. Even though I am aware of my shortcomings, I continue to strive for improvement. I am okay with all the criticism, but sometimes it hurts when your family sees it," he remarked. Padakkalam, which also stars Suraj Venjaramoodu, Sharaf U Dheen and Sandeep Pradeep, is streaming on JioHotstar and OTTplay Premium.
