Sahasam director Bibin Krishna: 'My debut film must have been a full-fledged comedy but...' | Exclusive

In an interview with OTTplay, the filmmaker talked about his initial plans to make his debut with a comedy movie and the factors that influenced this decision.

Malayalam film, Sahasam, which hit the big screen on August 8 is getting overwhelmingly positive reviews from viewers due to its entertaining elements. The comedy drama is directed by Bibin Krishna, who is known for his debut movie, Twenty One Grams which is available to watch on JioHotstar and OTTplay Premium. In an interview with OTTplay, the filmmaker talked about his initial plans to make his debut with a comedy movie and the factors that influenced this decision.

'Comedy is a risky genre'

Bibin stated that he personally enjoys watching comedies and had a strong desire to direct a comedy for his first film, but he decided against it because it was difficult to pitch it. "It is a risky genre, and I chose to submit this thread to the producer after Twenty One Grams. I only began working on the script after he encouraged me to do so," he stated. He asserts that comedy is subjective and what we believe would resonate with the public may not work.

The director made it clear that he wanted to create something more relevant to today's culture rather than the same slapstick humour that Malayalis have seen a lot. "The majority of the humour in this movie is situational, and I was not sure if it would work until the film's release. Fortunately, the positive feedback suggest that it worked, and I'm glad about that," he continued.

'Sahasam not based on real incidents but..'

Bibin remarked that the comedy entertainer is not based on any real life incident however being an IT professional he knows the premises and the lives of these people. "The other characters are all made up and evolved over time. "I composed the flat sequence in the climax first based on the remixed version of 'Oru Muthum Thedi'," he stated. The filmmaker mentioned that he and the music composer of the movie, Bipin Ashok, shortlisted ten Malayalam songs until choosing 'Oru Muthum Thedi'.
