Director Jude Anthany Joseph’s 2018 is still continuing its successful run at the box office. The Malayalam film, which released in other languages a week ago, has also managed to captivate the audience in these regions and a major reason for this is how the film’s story and characters struck a chord with the viewers.

In a recent interview with a radio channel, Jude revealed that a major scene featuring the fisherfolk community, who were hailed as heroes for their rescue efforts during the 2018 Kerala floods, was almost edited out from the movie.

Jude said the scene featuring Nileen Sandra, who played Winston’s wife in the film, had a long monologue where her character talks about how the fisherfolk community stays together and also looks out for each other.

The film’s editor Chamman Chakko had suggested that the dialogue had a few “cringe” moments and would be trolled in theatres. However, Jude said that he wanted to retain the scene as he felt that it would connect with the common people. He also brushed off the idea that a film is only for the discerning audience as it needed certain scenes that would work with common people too.

Though the scene, which also has Asif Ali, Narain and Lal as part of it, stood out, it worked well to highlight the plight of the fisherfolk in Kerala, especially during rains and floods – where most of the community have to move to relief camps to escape the wrath of the sea.

2018, which also has Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali and Tanvi Ram as part of the cast, has already become the highest grossing Malayalam movie ever, surpassing Rs 150 crore worldwide. The film’s Telugu version too was lapped up by the audience and has generated significant box office income for a dubbed Malayalam film. 2018 is set to release on Sony LIV on June 7.
