Sherni, starring Vidya Balan, Vijay Raaz, Neeraj Kabi among others, dropped on Amazon Prime Video on June 18. Quite apt with the title, the film explores a tigress on the loose with Vidya Vincent (played by the incomparable Vidya Balan) posted in the jungles of Madhya Pradesh to find the animal. Contrary to the officials, politicians and the villagers, Vidya wants to bring in the tigress unharmed. Much like Amit Masurkar’s Newton, Sherni portrays Vidya as a government official who’s just trying to do her job with sincerity.

A fresh concept

There are few films which explore the plight of the animals, the ever disappearing nature and the communities which revolve around it. In this aspect, Sherni does a good job to bring to the fore man vs animal concept which we usually just read about in the papers.

Fighting the system

The system always seems to be rigged towards women and the marginalised communities. In this slow burner, with a scene waiting to pounce on you never afar, Vidya Balan fights the corrupt system, tiresome patriarchy and politicians who want the problems resolved by hook or crook stat so as to guarantee winning them the upcoming election. All the while, Balan’s character sticks to her ideals and does whatever she can to find the tigress.

The forest friends

In Sherni, the local villagers come into focus, along with their livelihood, fears and beliefs. In fact, some among them, known as the forest friends, play a significant role to bring some respite to Vidya towards the end, leaving you with a scene that’ll definitely stay with you even after the film’s over.

Beautiful cinematography and accompanying score

As the film opens with a pan shot of the lush green landscape, viewers can be treated to not only stunning visuals but also a great background score. Numerous scenes are shot within the depths of the jungle, giving you a rich experience of the wilderness.

An uplifting supporting cast

We have always come to expect a graceful and impactful performance from Vidya Balan but the supporting cast of Sherni further uplifts the movie. Whether it’s Brijendra Kala, Neeraj Kabi, Ila Arun, or Vijay Raaz and Sharat Saxena - they all put up commendable performances that’ll surely win your heart.
