Although netizens were cheering on and believed that the world is healing, unfortunately, protests began soon after the teaser dropped. Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena aka MNS sent a message loud and clear - that they would not allow the movie to release in theatres.

Abir Gulaal was met with resistance almost immediately after the teaser of Fawad Khan's Bollywood comeback film was announced with a teaser. "We only learned about this film’s release today when the makers announced it. But we are making it clear that we will not allow this film to release in Maharashtra because it features a Pakistani actor. Under no circumstances will we permit such films to be released in the state," MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar told Dainik Bhaskar, assuring that a full statement would be issued soon.
