Akshay Kumar believes it is mindless to boycott films. The actor, along with the director Aanand L Rai and actresses Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna and Smrithi Srikanth, was in Kolkata on Monday to promote his film Raksha Bandhan. The film is set to hit the theatres on August 11. The team met the media at the press conference at a multiplex in the city.

Boycott Raksha Bandhan started trending on Twitter a day after Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha was trending. A group of netizens called to boycott Akshay’s family drama after an old tweet of one of the writers Kanika Dhillon resurfaced on social media. They dug out Kanika’s tweets condemning alleged atrocities in the name of ‘cow safety’ that seemed to have irked a group of netizens. Raksha Bandhan is co-written by Himanshu Sharma.

While responding to a question on the social media call about boycotting Raksha Bandhan and Laal Singh Chaddha, Akshay said that India is a free country and everybody is allowed to do whatever they want. “I can’t say anything on this. If you don’t like it, what can I do? The movie is there and there are also a few people who do all these things. They can do whatever they want. It is a free country and everybody is allowed to do whatever they want.”

Elaborating further, Akshay said, “This industry, or any industry – clothes, builder or entertainment – they all help the economy of India. Nothing will make sense if people do such things. We are on the verge of making our country the biggest and the greatest. I will request you, don’t get into all this for the betterment of our country.”

Akshay was spotted in a relaxed mood. He also posed for photojournalists at the do. Later, the entire group, including the actresses, posed with a yellow taxi at the EM Bypass area in Kolkata. The team will be travelling to over cities tonight for promotions.
