Premam director Alphonse Puthren helming a Rajinikanth movie would have been a dream combination for many. On Friday, the filmmaker issued a clarification about a rumour that has been troubling him for long – about a fake news article that claimed that the director said he didn’t want to work with the Tamil superstar.

Alphonse took to his social media page to say that after Premam’s release in 2015, he wanted to work with Thalaivar. However, an online article was published that claimed that the director “doesn’t want to do a Rajinikanth film”.

The news apparently even reached the ears of the superstar’s daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth, who enquired him about the post. Alphonse said that he assured her he never gave such an interview and the issue was sorted.

However, earlier this year, when the filmmaker had approached a “character artiste” for a role in his upcoming release Gold, which has Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara in the lead, the actor mentioned that he was talking to a director who said he didn’t want to do a Rajinikanth-starrer. This shocked the filmmaker, who mentioned it as one of the reasons he wanted to clarify the rumour once and for all.

Alphonse said that if his movie with Rajinikanth would have been made, it would have earned “more than 1000 crore of rupees by entertaining the audience”. The actor also said that the government would have benefited from the tax and now it’s a loss for him, the superstar and the audience.

The director, however, hasn’t abandoned hope for a film with the Thalaivar, as he ended the post by asking his well-wishers to pray for the movie to come to fruition.

Alphonse’s post won a lot of support from fans, who expressed their wish to see the project happen. Filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph too replied to the post, saying, “We are all waiting for that film.”
