Angamaly Diaries actor Antony Varghese is on a path to overhaul his image as an action star. His last three releases Innale Vare, Aanaparambile World Cup and Oh Meri Laila are proof of that, and his upcoming movie, Poovan, will once again showcase a different side of him.

However, the actor, in a recent interview, revealed all of this wasn’t exactly planned. In fact, he had met Poovan’s director Vineeth Vasudevan and scriptwriter Varun Dhara much before the release of his debut film.

Antony said that he knew both Vineeth as well as Varun through their mutual friend Vineeth Vishwam, who had also starred in the former’s debut film Angamaly Diaries. “Initially, they pitched a script that I liked and agreed to work on. But after that, they rewrote the entire script,” he said.

Vineeth explained that the team first began discussing the thread of the film during Thaneer Mathan Dinangal, which was directed by Girish AD, who is the co-producer of Poovan. “This was supposed to happen before Super Sharanya. But because all of us were acting in that movie, we thought it would be better if we worked on this movie after we had gained more experience. After that there was the pandemic,” said Vineeth, on why it took so long for the movie to hit theatres.

The movie is a feel-good comedy drama that also has a rooster in a pivotal role. Vineeth clarified that the movie doesn’t just revolve around the rooster but the people in the backdrop. “There are a lot of things happening around the rooster – a romance, a fight and several issues. The rooster is an essential part of all that’s transpiring,” the director said.

Poovan, which also has Vineeth Vishwam, Sajin Cherukayil, Anishma Anilkumar, Akhila Barghavan and Bindhu Sathishkumar as part of the cast, is set to hit theatres on January 20.
