Anu Hasan, cousin to actors Suhasini Maniratnam and Kamal Haasan, is a woman who dons many caps. Though she was launched as a lead actress with Suhasini’s directorial Indira in 1995, she hasn’t taken to acting regularly and has pursued her passions across other arenas over the years. She has played brief roles in a handful of Tamil films, serials besides taking up select offers in Telugu.

From acting to writing to entrepreneurship to her stint as a motivational speaker and TV show host, she has had an eventful career. While many of her Tamil films were dubbed into Telugu in the 2000s, she acted in a straight Telugu film only in 2009, Evaraina Epudaina, starring Varun Sandesh and Vimala Raman in the lead. She acted in films like 1 Nenokkadine, Endukante Premana and Chi La Sow later.

Her appearance as a good-at-heart yet nagging mom in Chi La Sow earned her rave reviews. Now, after a five year sabbatical from Telugu cinema, she’s returning with the Sri Simha Koduri starrer Ustaad. She plays a single mother named Gayathri in the film, who sets her own rules and is progressive despite the harsh ways of the world.

The makers refer to Anu Hasan’s part as ‘the strength of Surya (Simha) and his dependable shoulder to lean on.’ Kavya Kalyanram, who had a brief yet impactful career as a child actor and turned a leading lady with films like Masooda and Balagam, plays the female lead in the same. Written and directed by Phanideep, the film is produced by Rajani Korrapati, Rakesh Reddy Gaddam and Himank Reddy Duvvuru under Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram and Krishi Entertainments.

The technical crew of Ustaad comprises cinematographer Pavan Kumar Pappula, composer Akeeva B, costume designer Akhila Dasari and production designer Pravalya. Carthic is the editor.
