Aryan Khan spoke about his directorial debut web series The Ba***ds of Bollywood, his journey to filmmaking inspired from father Shah Rukh Khan and much more.

Aryan Khan - The Ba***ds of Bollywood
Aryan Khan’s The Ba***ds of Bollywood has received massive love but a certain section of viewers also felt that it was disrespectful. Aryan now has an answer for the very thing. The debut filmmaker, who chose to work behind the camera after seeing his superstar father Shah Rukh Khan, has spoken at length about his show and more. Here’s everything he said…
Stream Lakshya’s hits Kill, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, and Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil now on OTTplay Premium —access 25+ OTTs, including JioHotstar, ZEE5, Sony LIV, and Fancode, all for just Rs 149/month.
"We wanted to be self-deprecating, but not disrespectful anywhere," the director asserted to Variety, adding, "People being able to take jokes on themselves, I feel, is the first and most important thing about comedy. Take a joke on yourself and then spread the love."
Aware of the boundaries with The Ba***ds of Bollywood, Aryan said, "There was definitely a guardrail in my head when it came to (how) we can’t keep pushing the thing to a certain level where it becomes too spoofy. You can’t become an ‘Austin Powers’ suddenly." Nonetheless, Aryan feels it is a family drama where you can feel the emotions of everyone involved. The director further mentioned that he dealt with the controversial remarks about the show by understanding that every person in a single family also has different taste and thus, if there is something a parent doesn't like, an uncle might enjoy the very scene.
He defines the response to his series by stating, “What is interesting about the show is — in Bollywood, there’s many truths, many lies, that kind of are disguised… and vice versa, and it’s just the novelty of the mystery or the wonder that entices audiences to watch. People will be fascinated by it, be annoyed by it, be whatever they want because of the largeness and the mystery and the wonder.”
When asked what made him take up filmmaking, Aryan shared that he always preferred telling stories. “I just felt there’s more control behind the camera. If you do something that you love, you always do a better job. And it stops being a job after a point, you look forward to it every day, and it’s what you want to do.”
The deciding point for Aryan was seeing Shah Rukh Khan behind the cameras. The superstar would be involved in the production work right from VFX to lights, camera and more. That is where Aryan felt the magic of cinema unfolding and he decided to be a part of that world. By age 10, Aryan was already editing videos and trying to understand that magical world better.

Aryan revealed that his journey started with making various short films during COVID-19. A few featured Shah Rukh Khan and the others even starred Suhana Khan. That is when the idea of The Ba***ds of Bollywood germinated. While the show not having a fixed genre can be confusing for a few, Aryan saw it as an opportunity. “We can do an action sequence. We can suddenly break your heart by showing a death and then suddenly become a rom-com, you can suddenly become different because there are so many different [genres] and that’s also because of the length that we have,” he explained.
Like with most stories, The Ba***ds of Bollywood built the character arcs early and slowly led them to a grand climax scene. “We can almost say anything from any genre. Since we are making a TV show about the film industry, we can say anything in this genre that we have,” the debut filmmaker signed off.
