Filmmaker-actor Selvaraghavan starrer Bakasuran was released last week in cinemas. And it seems that the movie didn't receive the welcome that Selvaraghavan hoped for from the Tamil audience. According to some reports, a few shows were even cancelled due to low occupancy during its opening day.

As Bakasuran struggles to stay afloat at the box office, several high-profile members of Tamil cinema are endorsing the movie on social media. "It’s good to see @selvaragavan becoming a full fledged actor and playing the lead. Only a handful of us knew what a brilliant actor he is but the world is witnessing it now. Congratulations #Bakasuran Team!!," wrote Karthi on his Twitter account.

Karthi shares a close rapport with Selvaraghavan as he directed him in Aayirathil Oruvan (2010). Selvaraghavan's other friends also came together to promote the film. Many took to Twitter to congratulate the team behind Bakasuran claiming they were "hearing good things about the movie," without revealing whether they saw the movie or what did they think of the movie.

Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was also among those who extended his support to Bakasuran. "#Bakasuran Hearing good word of mouth for this movie in South...Congrats my friend @natty_nataraj & Dir @selvaraghavan," he wrote on his Twitter page.

Anurag's comments, however, drew a lot of flak as many questioned how can he support movies by the likes of Vetrimaaran and Pa Ranjith and then go on to promote Bakasuran. The movie's director Mohan G has a reputation for making movies that favour caste discrimination and patriarchal values.

Other members of the Tamil film fraternity including S. J. Suryah, Yuvan Shankar Raja, and GV Prakash have tweeted in favour of Bakasuran.

Bakasuran released along with Dhanush's Vaathi. While Bakasuran is struggling, Vaathi is performing well in Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states.
