Here are all the major Tamil films that will be hitting theatres in the month of August.
Come August, Tamil cinema is filled with noteworthy releases, which are expected to make cash registers ringing at the box office. While it is known fact that theatres in Tamil Nadu have been facing a dry spell, August being loaded with good films for release, is expected to break the spell. So, here are the major Tamil releases this August.
Boat is a Tamil film headlined by actor-comedian Yogi Babu. The film is helmed by director Chimbudevan and is a survival thriller. The film is set against the backdrop of pre-Independence era and is about ten people who are stranded on a boat and are on the way to seek shelter.
Vijay Antony is set to headline Mazhai Pidikkatha Manithan, which is directed by Vijay Milton. Sathyaraj, Megha Akash, Daali Dhananjaya, Murali Sharma, Saranya Ponvannan, Pruthvi Ambaar, Thalaivasal Vijay and many others, are also part of the cast. The film is touted to be an action thriller.
Directed by Halitha Shameem, Minmini stars Esther Anil, Gaurav Kaalai and Pravin Kishore, among others. The film is a coming-of-age film that follows two youngsters who carry survivors’ guilt. Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, who shot the film, has also produced it along with Murali Krishnan. Khatija Rahman has scored the music. The director had shot a few portions of the film in 2015 and had waited for her cast to grow up and reprise their roles.
Thangalaan is directed by Pa Ranjith and headlined by Vikram. The period-action drama is about a group of tribals who are exploited by the Britishers to find gold in the Kolar Gold Fields. The film also stars actors Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Hari Krishnan and others. Thangalaan is produced by Jio Studios, Neelam Productions and Studio Green. The technical crew consists of Tamil Praba as co-writer, cinematographer Kishor Kumar and editor Selva RK. GV Prakash has scored the music for the film.
Demonte Colony 2 is the sequel to the 2015 film Demonte Colony. The horror thriller film is headlined by actor Arulnithi and helmed by filmmaker Ajay Gnanamuthu. Actors Priya Bhavanishankar, Antti Jaaskelainen, Tsering Dorjee, Arunpandian, Muthukumar, Meenakshi Govindarajan, Sarjano Khalid, Archana Ravichandran and others are also part of the cast. The sequel seems to be a continuation of the first film which revolves around a group of friends who bring back a cursed necklace from a haunted bungalow.
The Tamil remake of Hindi black comedy film Andhadhun, titled Andhagan, stars Prashanth in the lead role. The film is directed by the actor's father and actor Thiagarajan. Besides Prashanth, the film also stars Simran, Priya Anand, Karthik Muthuraman, Samuthirakani, Yogi Babu, Urvasi, K.S. Ravikumar, and Vanitha Vijaykumar, Leela Samson, Poovaiyar, Manobala, Besant Ravi, Mohan Vaithiya, Lakshmi Pradeep, Rekha Suresh, Semmalar, and Kavitha, among others. It revolves around a blind pianist who witnesses a murder.
Keerthy Suresh is headlining Raghu Thatha, which is being produced by the Hombale Films production banner. The film marks the banner's debut in Tamil cinema. Raghu Thatha is written and directed by Suman Kumar in his directorial debut. He is known for his work in Farzi and Guns & Gulaabs, among others. Actors MS Bhaskar, Ravindra Vijay, Devadarshni, Jayakumar, Rajeev Ravindranathan, Anandsami, Rajesh Balachandran, Ismath Banu, Aadhira Pandilakshmi, Janaki, and Chu Khoy Sheng. KS Mippu, Mukesh, and Manoj Kumar Kalaivanan are also part of the film.
Vaazhai is written and directed by filmmaker Mari Selvaraj and produced by Disney+ Hotstar, Navvi Studios, and Farmer’s Master Plan Production. Actors Ponvel M, Raghul R, Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, J Sathish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, Janaki, and others are part of the cast. Vaazhai is shot by cinematographer Theni Eswar and editor Suriya Pradhaman. The film primarily revolves around child artists and a young boy’s fascination towards his teacher.

Directed by PS Vinothraj who made the critically acclaimed film Koozhangal, Kottukkaali is an upcoming film starring Soori and Anna Ben in the lead roles. The film marks the Tamil debut of Anna Ben, who was recently seen in Kalki. Kottukkaali is backed by Sivakarthikeyan under his home banner Sivakarthikeyan Productions. The film has been screened at various international film festivals and won rave reviews from the media fraternity who have got a chance to watch it. The film revolves around a woman who falls in love with a man from another caste, while her family believes she is under a spell and possessed.
