Bad Girl is written and directed by filmmaker Varsha Bharath in her directorial debut. The film is backed by filmmaker Vetrimaaran. Released in theatres on September 5, Bad Girl is a coming-of-age drama which is headlined by actor Anjali Sivaraman.
As per Sacnilk report, Bad Girl has collected Rs 0.22 crore in to days. Given it does not boast any star ensemble, and has to compete with Sivakarthikeyan’s Madharaasi, the film is making small strides to hold the screens. But it has also been steady, given the film had maintained its earnings from 0.11 crore to minting the same amount the second day as well.
The film is essentially a coming-of-age drama which is about a girl called Ramya. We see her life from school days where her rebellious nature is being called out, and till her life in the early 30s when she chooses to live by her standards without any apology. The film explores the societal norms fuelled by misogyny and patriarchy-riddled family expectations that are imposed on women while growing up and later. While some feel that the film talks about the oppression of savarna women with no intersectionality, others support the film for its relatability.
Bad Girl stars Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role with supporting cast including actors Shanthi Priya, Saranya Ravichandran, Hridhu Haroon, TeeJay Arunasalam, Sashank Bommireddipalli. The technical crew includes three cinematographers; Preetha Jayaraman (ISC), Jagadeesh Ravi, Prince Anderson, while Radha Sridhar is the editor. Amit Trivedi has scored the music.
It won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and Young Jury Award for Best Feature Film at the 40th Cinema Jove - Valencia International Film Festival in Spain.
